November/ December 2009 Newsletter

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

September and October 2009 have flown by … so much for a Quarterly Newsletter!

It’s been one of those dry summers … We dry land farm, and had very little rain … no rain, no hay.  We are purchasing hay from our neighbor who has irrigated  fields in the valley (10 miles) from us, to get us through the winter.  He does a GREAT job raising hay … so we’re happy he’s so close.

cowingateThe picture above is one of our older cows enjoying a “bite to eat” while waiting for her calf.  It’s that time of year we are busy bringing the cows off the forest lands and branding calves.

Here’s a couple of pictures of the family while “branding”…  dealing with some rain and mud … (finally it rains … too little too late!)  We are pairing up the calves with their mothers; then we give the calf an ear-tag # and then a brand.  It’s a long day … with skillful cowboys and horses!
