THE RANCH
Oberg Brothers Herefords LLC

Homestead

The ranch was homesteaded by both of Tina’s great-grandfathers; one in 1899 and the other in 1902. Her grandfather, William Oberg merged the two ranches as one and her father, Norman Oberg and his brother, Marvin Oberg enlarged and operated it until 1991. Hence, the name Oberg Brothers. In 1991 the two families decided to operate their two halves separately.

Tina and I have been working on the ranch since1981, and have just recently taken over the reins in 2000. We are the fourth generation, and our three children, a niece and two nephews have spent many hours in the saddle as the fifth generation.

Stewardship

The traditions of good stewardship have been taught to each generation. In 1982 our ranch was awarded the Conservation Farm of the Year. Tina’s father’s philosophy about grazing was to take half and leave half which always insured that there would be grass for the next year. A sustainable practice before the word sustainable became popular.

In 1995 the Conservation District awarded us the Wildlife Farm of the Year. We have both mule deer and white tail, many species of grouse, not to mention hawks, eagles and owls.

Tree farming has been a big part of our ranch as well. A fire burned a good share of our timber in 1985 but we continue to manage the wood lots that survived and plant new seedlings.

Genetics

We have always worked hard for quality in the cattle. Good genetics in your herd is the beginning of great beef. We raise Hereford and Hereford/Angus cross cattle. Both are English breeds. We have stayed away from the exotic breeds because of their high-headed nature. Our cattle are calmer than most, mainly because of their breeding, but also because of the way we handle them. We use horses to move them around, not motorbikes.

We select only the best heifers for replacements and purebred bulls for our herd sires. Here, to the right, is our oldest son Brian after he showed his first fair animal. He received Best of Show, Grand Champion and a Reserve Grand. Oberg Brothers Natural Beef, free-ranged, grass fed
